Goal of the meeting

Dark matter is a long outstanding problem in modern astrophysics and one of the biggest mysteries physicists are currently struggling to understand. Its presence throughout the Universe is inferred by its gravitational effects on normal matter. More specifically, two observational aspects, namely, the behaviour of the galactic rotation curves and the mass discrepancy in clusters of galaxies led to the necessity of considering the existence of dark matter at a galactic and extra-galactic scale. Physicists have taken different paths to approach this problem. One of the leading lines of research is to look for new matter in the form of yet unknown particles. However, a promising avenue of research is to consider modifications of General Relativity, such as the presence of higher order curvature terms which seems to provide us with an elegant geometric interpretation of the dark matter problem. Each of these paths are then divided in many sub-paths with a plethora of research lines.

This workshop has the goal of bringing together researchers, both from theory and experiment, with different views on the dark matter issue, to be presented during the talks and discussed throughout the breaks. Hopefully we may all learn from each other and foster new ideas into understanding the perplexing nature of the dynamics of the Universe and of gravity itself.

The Azores Islands

"Rich in culture, abundant in wildlife and one of the best whale watching spots in the world, the Azores, set of 9 Portuguese islands, is an archipelago of lush green volcanic islands. The Azores lie at the heart of the North Atlantic, their remote location offering visitors access to an unspoiled paradise. The huge array of activities offered means you could be visiting a UNESCO Heritage Site one day, walking up a snow-capped mountain and soaking in thermal rock pools the next, then swimming with wild dolphins and watching sperm whales the day after. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, nature lover or just want to relax on a beautiful, exotic island, the Azores has something for you."

From Visit Azores.
