Airport - Latest News

Purdue University's twin-city communities of West Lafayatte & Lafayette did not have a local commercial air service for quite some time, but Purdue announced the return of commercial air service to and from ORD Chicago around April 2024. It has been announced that commercial air travel is back and in time for the Forum:

  • Book your 99$ travel here: https://www.iflysouthern.com
  • Be aware that the airport ID is LAF and flights are only to ORD Chicago for now.
  • United might allow to book through and importantly allow luggage to be checked through, the LOC has no experience and its not tested!
  • Be aware that these are 9-seater Cessna's so not your usual flight experience.
  • Be aware that there is a Lafayette in Lousiana which is not the same as Lafayette in Indiana - Purdue University is in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Travel

Purdue University is easily accessible from Indianapolis International Airport (IND), Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), and Chicago Midway Airport. Shuttles from these airports to the Purdue campus are between USD25 and USD60 one-way. Please consult this webpage for help on how to get to Purdue: How to get to Purdue

Couple of pointers to be made here:

  • Please note that Monday, 27th May, prior to the FTDM workshop is a holiday (Memorial Day) in the US but for the most part this does not affect any travel schedules.
  • By car it is approximately 2.5h (ORD / Midway) or about 1h (IND) drive to Purdue University.
  • Train — Lafayette has an AMTRAK Station that provides service to Chicago, it is not a high-speed connection and neither frequent.
  • In town transportation includes free public transport back and forth from campus, as well as Uber, and Lyft services. We will arrange for pickup close to Hilton and Hampton on West Lafayette side and drive everybody up to the Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center.
  • Airport — we currently have three preferred airport shuttle providers: EAC, Lafayette Limo, and Reindeer Shuttle.

If you arrive by Bus or Train from Chicago or elsewhere, you will de-board at either Purdue Memorial Union (PMU) or CityBus center. You can walk to either the Hilton Garden Inn or the Hampton Inn & Suites, see map below.

Transport at Purdue University

The workshop venue (Composite Center, CMSC) is not located on the actual campus but 2 miles away from Physics. We are in the process to arrange for transport (either chartered bus or shared cars) every morning and afternoon between the venue and "central" pick-up place near the Hilton Garden Inn.

Accommodation

Most importantly: Purdue nor the FTDM24 organizers work with travellerpoint(dot)org, please disregard their emails and do not click on any links contained in those emails - its a scam.

Multiple Hotel options in reasonable distance and with downtown urban flair exist in the local area. We have negotiated cost-effective rates at the Hampton Inn & Suites, West Lafayette and the most cost-effective option is the summer intern student housing / dormatory on campus @Hawkins Hall (see below for details).
